Date & Location
Thursday, 2nd Muharram 61 AH — Plains of Karbala (modern-day Iraq).
The Journey Ends Here
After long travel through the deserts of Hijaz and Iraq, Imām Ḥusayn (A.S.) arrived near the Euphrates with around 72 loyal companions and family members. When the land was named—Al-Ghādiriyyah, Al-Nīnawā, then Karbala—he responded with the well-known meaning of the word:
“This is the place of karb (distress) and balāʾ (trial).”
The Stand Begins
Yazīd’s forces led by Ḥurr ibn Yazīd intercepted the caravan earlier, ordered to prevent movement toward Kufa and escort them to an isolated place—now achieved at Karbala.
Spiritual Atmosphere
The camp that night was filled with Qur’an recitation, prayer, and tears—not fear, but preparation for sacrifice.
Reflection
Truth is not meant to run. Karbala would become the stage where Allah distinguishes the pure from the corrupt.
