The First Divine Permission to Fight: A Turning Point in Islamic History

A Defining Moment in Islamic History

On the 12th of Ṣafar, 2 AH, Divine Revelation marked a decisive shift in the Muslim struggle. After enduring years of persecution, torture, and exile, Muslims were finally granted permission to defend themselves.

Years of Patience Before Permission

For thirteen years in Makkah, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions faced relentless oppression. They were mocked, tortured, socially boycotted, and driven from their homes — yet commanded to remain patient.

Even after migrating to Madinah, threats from Quraysh continued, placing the Muslim community under constant danger.

The Qur’anic Revelation

“Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory.” (Qur’an 22:39)

“They are those who have been expelled from their homes without right—only because they say, ‘Our Lord is Allah.’” (Qur’an 22:40)

Key Principles Established

  • Permission, not aggression: This was not a command to attack, but a right to defend.
  • Justice-centered warfare: Fighting was allowed only due to oppression.
  • Ethical limits: Islam rejected transgression, targeting civilians, and injustice.

Historical Impact

This revelation laid the foundation for organized Muslim defense and directly preceded the Battle of Badr, which occurred just seven months later in Ramaḍān, 2 AH.

Muslims began forming expeditions (ghazwāt) to secure Madinah and deter further aggression.

Spiritual Reflections

  • Patience has its divine limits.
  • Victory is granted by Allah — not by numbers or weapons.
  • Divine timing governs every struggle.

Final Reflection

This moment teaches that Islam does not sanctify violence, but it does not sanctify oppression either. When injustice reaches its peak, Allah grants the oppressed the right to stand with dignity and restraint.
