The True Spirit of Tazkiyah
The essence of tazkiyah is not outward righteousness alone, but inward transformation. It is to adorn the heart with the character traits Allah loves — not as a claim of divinity, but as a reflection of true servanthood (ʿubūdiyyah).
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Adorn yourselves with the character traits of Allah.” (Reported in al-Bayhaqī’s Shuʿab al-Īmān)
This does not mean sharing in divinity, but embodying mercy, justice, patience, and truthfulness as signs of humility before Allah.
Khuluq as a Mirror of Divine Names
In tazkiyah, purified khuluq becomes a mirror reflecting Allah’s Beautiful Names. Each moral refinement is rooted in recognition of its divine source.
Ar-Raḥmān — Mercy
Reflecting Ar-Raḥmān means cultivating mercy toward creation. A heart softened by compassion forgives, gentles speech, and shows kindness without expectation. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The Merciful shows mercy to those who are merciful.” (Tirmidhī)
Al-ʿAdl — Justice
Justice in khuluq is standing for truth even when it is difficult. Allah commands:
“Stand firmly for justice, even against yourselves.” (Surah an-Nisā’ 4:135)
A purified heart does not bend truth for comfort, loyalty, or fear.
Al-Ḥalīm — Forbearance
Forbearance is calmness in provocation. True strength is restraint, as the Prophet ﷺ taught:
“The strong one is not the one who overcomes others, but the one who controls himself in anger.” (Bukhārī, Muslim)
Aṣ-Ṣabūr — Patience
Patience is bearing hardship with serenity and trust in Allah’s timing. A patient heart does not rush outcomes, nor does it despair during trials.
Al-Karīm — Generosity
Generosity in khuluq is giving freely from what Allah has provided — wealth, time, attention, and care. True generosity gives even when no recognition follows.
Al-Ghafūr — Forgiveness
Forgiveness is releasing resentment for Allah’s sake. Allah asks:
“Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you?” (Surah an-Nūr 24:22)
Ash-Shakūr — Gratitude
Gratitude recognizes blessings in all forms and responds with humility, praise, and obedience.
Al-Wadūd — Loving Kindness
Loving kindness is sincere care for others without expectation. It reflects divine love expressed through gentleness and goodwill.
As-Sattār — Concealment
Concealment of others’ faults protects dignity. A purified heart does not expose weaknesses, just as it hopes Allah will conceal its own.
At-Tawwāb — Repentance
Openness to repentance makes a heart approachable and humble. It allows correction and constant return to Allah after mistakes.
Ar-Razzāq — Providing
Reflecting Ar-Razzāq means becoming a means of provision — emotional, spiritual, or material — for others.
Al-Ḥaqq — Truthfulness
Truthfulness is integrity in speech and action. A purified khuluq speaks truth gently but firmly, without distortion or concealment.
The Essence of Tazkiyah
As the heart is polished through remembrance, the attributes Allah loves begin to reflect through it — like sunlight through a clean mirror. This is the goal of tazkiyah: not perfection, but sincere alignment with divine guidance.
