The Meaning of Qiṭmīr
Allah says:
“…those whom you invoke besides Him do not possess even a qiṭmīr.” (Qur’an 35:13)
Qiṭmīr refers to the thin, transparent membrane that wraps a date seed. It is fragile, nearly invisible, and utterly insignificant. In Qur’anic language, it represents something so worthless that it holds no power, ownership, or value.
Why Allah Uses Qiṭmīr
Dates were central to Arab life — economically, culturally, and spiritually. Using qiṭmīr struck directly at the Arab psyche. If something cannot even own the skin of a date pit, how can it control destiny, provide benefit, or deserve worship?
Tafsīr Insights
- Imam al-Ṭabarī: The verse exposes idols that were invoked despite having zero ownership or authority.
- Imam al-Qurṭubī: Qiṭmīr was a visceral metaphor that shattered idol-worship emotionally and logically.
- Imam Ibn Kathīr: The Qur’an gradually degrades false gods through naqīr, fatīl, and qiṭmīr — reducing them to nothingness.
Qiṭmīr and the Nafs
Sufi scholars internalized qiṭmīr as a description of the nafs (ego). Though it pretends to greatness, it holds no real substance before Allah.
“Your worst enemy is your nafs which resides between your sides.” (Hadith)
Statements of the Awliyā’
- Junayd al-Baghdādī: “The nafs is like a dog — bark if chained, bite if freed.”
- Imam al-Ghazālī: “A blind beggar claiming kingship while sitting on filth.”
- Imam Rūmī: “The nafs is a drop pretending to be an ocean.”
- Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī: “More worthless than a gnat’s wing.”
The Ontological Reality
Ibn ʿArabī explained that false gods are projections of the nafs, dunya, and Shayṭān. None possess real existence or authority.
“Have you seen the one who takes his desire as his god?” (Qur’an 45:23)
Hierarchy of Insignificance
- Qiṭmīr: Worthlessness of the nafs
- Naqīr: Deception of Shayṭān
- Fatīl: Fleeting nature of the world
Final Reflection
In an age obsessed with ego, image, and self-worship, qiṭmīr is a divine reality check. Anything that distracts from Allah — no matter how glorified — is thinner than a membrane on a date pit.
