Khairal Bariyya, Nazrah Ilayya: The Lovers’ Prayer and the Secret of a Prophetic Glance

Khairal Bariyya, Nazrah Ilayya

“O Best of Creation, cast your glance on me.”

Background

This line comes from traditional qasā’id (poetic praises) in Islamic spirituality, often recited with immense love in gatherings of dhikr. It is a cry of longing from a heart that has understood: the gaze of the Prophet ﷺ is not just sight — it is light, love, and spiritual transformation.

What is a “Spiritual Station”?

In the language of the ‘Ārifīn (knowers of Allah) and the Sufis/Awliyā, the path to Allah is made up of stations (maqāmāt) and states (aḥwāl).

Examples of Maqāmāt (Spiritual Stations)

  • Tawbah (Repentance): Turning back to Allah sincerely.
  • Zuhd (Detachment): Letting go of dunya for Allah.
  • Sabr (Patience): Accepting Allah’s decree with trust.
  • Shukr (Gratitude): Living in constant thanks.
  • Ikhlāṣ (Sincerity): Doing all for Allah alone.
  • Mahabbah (Love): Loving Allah and His Messenger ﷺ purely.
  • Tawakkul (Reliance): Entrusting yourself fully to Allah.
  • Ma‘rifah (Gnosis): Deep experiential knowledge of Allah.

Note: Each station requires effort, purification, trials, and time — sometimes decades.

How Can a Single Glance of the Prophet ﷺ Replace 1000 Years of Worship?

The Prophet ﷺ is the Light of Guidance

Allah says:

“Indeed, there has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book.” (Surah Al-Mā’idah 5:15)

Many mufassirūn say the “light” here refers to the Prophet ﷺ.

A Glance is the Reflection of Allah’s Mercy

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“I am a mercy sent to the worlds.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

So even his gaze is raḥmah. One glance can burn away lifetimes of sins, melt the ego, and plant a love that transforms you eternally.

Love for the Prophet ﷺ Opens Hidden Doors

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“A person will be with whom he loves.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī)

If a believer longs even for a glance, it shows the heart is already moving toward purification and the soul is awakening.

The Gaze Transfers Spiritual Inheritance

The Awliyā say:

“The gaze of a Ṣiddīq can raise a sinner to sainthood in a moment.”

So what then of the gaze of the Sayyid al-Mursalīn ﷺ? He is the source of sainthood.

The Signs of True Love

  • Constant Salawāt (Durood)
  • Following his Sunnah
  • Mentioning him with tears
  • Longing for him in dreams
  • Preferring his way over your desires

Final Reflection

One glance from the Prophet ﷺ contains within it:

  • the mercy of Allah
  • the healing of the soul
  • the love of a father
  • the lifting of veils

Du‘ā of the Lovers

O Allah, grant me a glance from Your Prophet ﷺ that revives my heart and lifts me to You.
