Two Creations, One Human Being
In the science of tazkiyah, Islam makes a precise and meaningful distinction between two dimensions of the human being: khalaq (outer creation) and khuluq (inner character). Though both arise from the same Arabic root, they refer to two entirely different realms of beauty and responsibility.
Khalaq: The Outer Form
Khalaq (خَلْق) refers to the outward, physical creation of a person — the body, appearance, and structure fashioned by Allah. It is determined by divine decree and genetics, beyond human choice.
Allah says:
“He who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you.” (Surah al-Infiṭār 82:7)
In tazkiyah, khalaq represents the part of a person that is seen by people. While one cannot change their physical creation, it can be honored through cleanliness, modesty, and gratitude toward Allah.
Khuluq: The Inner Character
Khuluq (خُلُق) refers to the inward moral and spiritual composition — intentions, temperament, patience, humility, sincerity, mercy, and truthfulness. Unlike khalaq, khuluq is not fixed; it is shaped through struggle, remembrance, and purification.
Allah praised the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saying:
“And indeed, you are upon a magnificent character.” (Surah al-Qalam 68:4)
This verse highlights that true excellence is measured not by form, but by character.
Khalaq and Khuluq in Tazkiyah
In the path of purification:
- Khalaq belongs to the physical realm and is shaped by Allah at birth.
- Khuluq belongs to the spiritual realm and is refined through tazkiyah.
- Khalaq is beautified by modesty and cleanliness.
- Khuluq is beautified by dhikr, sincerity, and righteous struggle.
Seen by People, Known by Allah
Outer appearance is seen by people, but inner character is seen by Allah. A person may be admired for handsomeness, yet elevated by mercy. Physical beauty fades, but moral beauty endures beyond this world.
Classical Wisdom on the Two
Ibn al-Qayyim explained that just as physical beauty lies in proportion and balance of the body, spiritual beauty lies in harmony of the soul — truthfulness, patience, and mercy.
Imām al-Ghazālī further clarified that khalaq is the image seen by the eyes, while khuluq is the image seen by hearts. Human perfection is achieved when inner character matches or surpasses outer form.
The Essence of True Beauty
In tazkiyah, the goal is not to change what Allah created outwardly, but to align the inner self with divine guidance. When khuluq is purified, it radiates nūr that beautifies actions, speech, and even the face.
In Summary
Khalaq is the creation of Allah reflected in your body. Khuluq is the refinement of your soul reflected in your behavior. True spiritual beauty is when your inner character reflects the Sunnah as beautifully as your outer form reflects the creation of Allah.
